Twickenham Cleaners Health and Safety Policy

Twickenham Cleaners is committed to providing professional cleaning services in a manner that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, visitors and members of the public. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks arising from our cleaning operations in homes, offices and commercial premises.

We recognise our duty to comply with relevant health and safety legislation and industry standards. We also expect our employees and contractors to co-operate by working safely, following agreed procedures and reporting concerns promptly so that we can maintain safe, clean and well-managed working environments.

Health and Safety Responsibilities

Overall responsibility for health and safety at Twickenham Cleaners rests with senior management, who ensure that appropriate resources, systems and supervision are in place. Management is responsible for setting standards, reviewing performance and making sure that this policy is communicated and implemented across the business.

Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day implementation of this policy. They must ensure that cleaning staff receive adequate information, instruction and training, that safe systems of work are followed and that any hazards or incidents are investigated and addressed.

All employees and contractors have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. They must follow safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear any required personal protective equipment and immediately report hazards, near misses, accidents or defective equipment.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Twickenham Cleaners undertakes risk assessments for the cleaning tasks we carry out. These assessments identify significant hazards, the people who may be affected and the control measures required to reduce risks to an acceptable level. Risk assessments are reviewed periodically and whenever work practices, equipment or materials change.

Based on these assessments, we implement safe working procedures for tasks such as mopping, vacuuming, high dusting, washroom cleaning, waste handling, carpet and upholstery cleaning, and the use of powered equipment. Staff are instructed to follow these procedures at all times and to seek guidance if they are unsure how to carry out a task safely.

Training, Information and Supervision

All new starters receive an induction that covers basic health and safety responsibilities, emergency arrangements, incident reporting and safe use of cleaning products and equipment. Task-specific training is provided for items such as floor machines, carpet extractors, steam cleaners and other powered tools.

Refresher training is given as required and when new equipment, methods or products are introduced. Supervisors monitor working practices to ensure that training is understood and applied and that any unsafe behaviour is corrected promptly. Written instructions, labels and safety data information are made available and explained where necessary.

Chemicals and Hazardous Substances

Twickenham Cleaners uses cleaning products that are appropriate for professional cleaning and, wherever possible, selects solutions that minimise risks to health and the environment while still delivering effective results. All substances are assessed, and control measures are implemented in line with recognised standards for handling hazardous substances.

Cleaning chemicals must only be used as directed by the manufacturer and in the dilutions specified. Staff are trained not to mix chemicals, not to decant into unlabelled containers and to ensure good ventilation when using strong products. Personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks or eye protection is provided where required and must be worn as instructed.

Chemicals are stored securely, out of reach of unauthorised persons and away from heat sources. Any spillages are dealt with immediately using safe methods and appropriate materials, and waste products are disposed of in accordance with local requirements and good environmental practice.

Equipment, Machinery and Manual Handling

All equipment supplied by Twickenham Cleaners, including vacuum cleaners, floor buffers and other machinery, is maintained in safe working order and inspected regularly. Defective equipment must be taken out of use immediately and reported to a supervisor. Staff are trained in the correct use of machinery, including starting, operating, transporting and cleaning down equipment.

Manual handling is an important part of cleaning work, especially when moving furniture, waste, supplies and equipment. We provide guidance on safe lifting techniques, encourage the use of trolleys and other handling aids and ask staff not to attempt to lift or move loads that are too heavy or awkward. Work is planned to minimise unnecessary carrying and bending wherever reasonably practicable.

Slips, Trips, Falls and Site Safety

Preventing slips, trips and falls is a core part of our health and safety approach. Wet floor signs and barriers must always be used when mopping or when floors are wet for any reason. Cables from vacuums and other equipment must be routed safely and kept away from walkways where possible.

Staff are asked to keep work areas tidy, avoid leaving tools or materials where they may cause obstruction and to report damaged flooring, inadequate lighting or other hazards. When working in client premises, we respect site rules and co-operate with clients to maintain safe access routes for occupants and visitors.

Personal Protective Equipment and Welfare

Where risks cannot be fully controlled by other means, personal protective equipment is provided. This may include gloves, masks, protective footwear or eye protection, depending on the task. Employees must use this equipment correctly, look after it carefully and report any loss or damage.

Reasonable welfare arrangements are made so that staff have access to drinking water, handwashing facilities and sanitary conveniences during their working day, either on our own premises or on client sites as appropriate.

Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, injuries, near misses and dangerous occurrences must be reported to a supervisor as soon as possible so that they can be recorded and investigated. We use this information to identify trends, improve control measures and prevent recurrence.

Staff are made aware of emergency procedures relevant to the premises in which they are working, including fire evacuation routes, alarm points and assembly areas. In the event of an emergency, work must stop immediately and employees should follow the site instructions and co-operate with emergency services.

Policy Review and Continuous Improvement

Twickenham Cleaners reviews this Health and Safety Policy at regular intervals and when there are significant changes in legislation, guidance, our activities or the nature of the risks we manage. We seek feedback from employees and clients to help us refine our arrangements and promote a culture of continual improvement in health and safety performance.

By working together and following this policy, we aim to deliver reliable, high-quality cleaning services while maintaining safe, healthy and respectful working environments for everyone involved.
